Kick off your New Year with easy to achieve, healthy resolutions!
With every New Year, come new resolutions, many of which revolve around health and fitness. Many of us start the year with big goals and often feel defeated when we can’t achieve them. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be hard. Start implementing small
changes and before you know, you’ll be ready to start next year’s resolutions.
Creating healthy eating habits is a big goal for many of us. With hectic, on-the- go lifestyles it can be challenging to eat well, but with a little planning can go a long way. Start by making a weekly meal plan before you go to the grocery store to ensure you eat healthy, save money and avoid food waste. To create a meal plan, determine what meals and snacks you’ll make in the coming week and write down all of the ingredients you’ll need, then shop only for the things on your list. You’ll avoid making extra trips to the store during the week, and with a complete list ready to go, grocery shopping will be quick and efficient.
When grocery shopping, avoid processed junk food by sticking to the perimeter of the store, where the majority of produce, meat, seafood and dairy are located. Stock up on fresh fruits and veggies and look for lean, healthy proteins like antibiotic-free meats and sustainably sourced seafood. For easy weeknight meals, look for quick cooking grains like quinoa and brown rice. When you head home, it’s time to start prepping for the week ahead.
When the majority of the ingredients are prepped, you’re much more likely to cook. Stick to easy to prepare recipes with clean, wholesome ingredients. Every meal should be a balance of lean protein, nutrient-rich veggies and fiber-rich grains. Now, that all of the work is done, take the time to actually sit down and enjoy your meal. Many of us are often distracted while we eat, which takes away from the experience and can cause us to overeat. You’ll immediately notice a deeper connection with your food.
Eating healthy doesn’t have to be hard. With a little preparation, you can have nutritious meals at the ready. Remember, small changes can have a big impact. Fewer grocery trips and home-cooked meals means you save money in the long run and you have more control
over what you eat. Now that you’re eating well, you can move on to the next resolution.
