Water quality. We ensure healthy fish and maintain water quality by keeping low fish densities and using high quality feed. By keeping densities low, we fight fewer diseases and eliminate the need for antibiotics or hormones in our tilapia. By limiting the biomass we farm in any one lake, we also maintain sustainable nutrient loads in the water.
Energy. Our processing plant in Sumatra, Indonesia uses low energy methods to transform byproducts into fish oil. Through a process that captures residual heat from freezers and coolers, we use less electricity to cool compressors and fish oil is produced without expending additional energy. The fish oil is then converted into a fossil fuel replacement powering our feed factory, resulting in significant electricity and fossil fuel savings.
Emissions. In Honduras, Regal Springs Tilapia produces biodiesel from fish oil that operates our electric generator and boilers. This creates an annual savings of 75,000 liters ($60,000) of conventional diesel per year, thereby slowing carbon dioxide emissions and reducing diesel demand.
Ocean shipping uses 98% less fuel than air. Ever conscious of the environment, we pioneered a new method of sustainably shipping fresh fish in specially refrigerated containers that keep the temperature at a steady 31 degrees. We call this method OceanChillâ„¢.![]()
